Vice-Chancellor Remarks at the Training on the Ethics of the Academic Profession
Good morning everyone, and a warm welcome to the second segment of the staff professional development which is designed to enhance the capacity, professionalism, and overall quality of our Faculty members in the discharge of our duties as academic staff. I want to commend the participants for their active participation since the commencement of this training series and to enjoin you to continue in this regard.
I am particularly delighted to welcome our Resource Person, Professor Kehinde Taiwo, who would be taking us on the Ethics of the Academic Profession. Like other professions, the academic profession has rules, regulations, and ethics guiding the activities of lecturers, thus the goal of this training is to foster professionalism, instill ethical values and promote positive behaviours among the academic staff of our great citadel of learning, Kings University.
It is important to state that aside from developing academic and pedagogical competence, academic staff are also expected to be ethical in the discharge of their primary duties of teaching, research, and mentoring students. As role models, you are expected to inculcate good moral values into the learners not only by instructing them but also through practice or demonstration. In addition, there are acceptable ways of appearing in class as well as in the academic environment to portray the profession in good light. Therefore, in the course of this segment, you will be enlightened on how to play a major role in bringing about desirable changes in the behaviours of students through the activities that they see and observe. Additionally, this training programme will afford staff members to improve their understanding of the Academic Profession as well as their commitment to the University’s vision and core values.
I commend participants to be attentive and participate actively through the entire sessions of today’s programme.
Thank you for listening and God bless you all.
