Specialization & Research
Plant genetics, genomics, bioinformatics and biotechnology, with research focused on the genetic diversity, conservation, and utilization of underutilized/orphan crops such as African yam bean and cowpea to improve food security and climate resilience. His work uses molecular markers, genomics, bioinformatics and biotechnological approaches to assess genetic variation, identify traits for stress tolerance and nutritional quality, and support breeding programs for neglected but nutritionally important legumes in sub-Saharan Africa.
Professional Biography
Dr Omena Bernard Ojuederie is a plant geneticist and biotechnologists. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Science at Kings University, Odeomu, Nigeria. He holds a B.Sc. Hons in Microbiology from University of Benin, and M.Sc. + PhD in Plant Genetics from University of Ibadan. He is also an Extraordinary Associate Professor of the Food Security and Safety Focus Area, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, North-West University, South Africa and the National Vice President Research and Outreach of the Nigerian Bioinformatics and Genomics Network. His research focuses on enhancing food and nutrition security in sub-Saharan Africa through genetic diversity assessment of underutilized legumes and medicinal plants using morphological and molecular markers, plant tissue culture, germplasm conservation, phytochemical analysis, and plant-microbe interactions. He’s currently working on promoting cultivation and utilization of African yam bean tubers in Nigeria.Dr Ojuederie has 53+ publications, 3,000+ citations, and serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Underutilized Legumes and as Guest Editor for Frontiers in Plant Science. He’s a recipient of the IFS Sweden grant
