BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

HISTORY OF BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

The Department of Business and Entrepreneurial studies was established in February, 2016 as one of pioneering departments of Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences. At its inception Prof. A.L Adesina of the University served as pioneer Head of the department and also as the dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences. Prof. A. O. Adigun took over from Prof. A.L Adesina as the Dean of the Faculty in May, 2018. The Department runs two programmes, B.Sc Business Administration and   B.Sc Entrepreneurship. The programmes operate an academic Curriculum that is tailored along the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS). Apart from this, other departments in the faculty have some of their courses domicile in the department of Business and Entrepreneurial studies. It, therefore, has a major role in the transformation of students into Resourceful Technocrats, expert, thinkers, solution providers and innovative scientists which are parts of the mission of the university. Dr E.  M. Akinseye acted as the Head of the Department during 2017/2018 and First semester 2018/2019 Academic session respectively. Dr. C. O. Aje took over the headship of the department second semester 2018/2019 Academic session. Dr. A.B Adeniyi the current head of the Department, took over at the beginning of 2020/2021 academic session.

The Department currently comprises of 13 staff members in the following categories: academic staff- Eight (8) and administrative staff- five (5). Academic staff are encouraged to attend Local and International seminars and conferences which the University either fully or partially sponsor. The department also encourages staff to participate in community research and development of programmes of the university in collaboration with other departments and faculties of the University. There are regular staff meetings in which issues such as seminar presentations, examinations, results, students and staff welfare are discussed. We also have in place students/ staff interactive forum.

PROGRAMME   PHILOSOPHY

The underlying philosophy of the Department of Business and Entrepreneurial studies is the development of innovative and creative minds that are well groomed for leadership responsibilities in industry, government and not-for-profit organizations. It aims at producing graduates that will exploit opportunities, establish new ventures, reinvent/add social and economic values to existing organisations.

 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Aim:

The Aim of the programme is to produce graduates with broad-based knowledge, timely acquired skills and competency towards solving the globally relevant intractable problems in the dynamic world using scientific approach.

Objectives

Objectives are to:

  1. prepare students for careers in the public and private sectors;
  2. teach students the requisite skills needed for creating viable enterprises, growing existing ones which are capable of competing in today’s highly competitive globalised markets for the attainment of economic growth and development of society;
  3. provide training in the principles and practice of management and the appropriate application to business in our dynamic environment;
  4. stimulate students intellectually through the study of Business Administration and to lead them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in a variety of contexts;
  5. develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired to solve the societies’ management problems;
  6. develop in students, a range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment; and
  7. Provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed for further studies in management related areas or in multi-disciplinary areas that involve management.

 ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

 (A) PROGRAMME TITLE:

 B.Sc.  Business Administration

 (B) ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Admission Entrance by UTME:

Credit level pass in five (5) subjects in the SSCE/GCE/NECO O/L or their equivalent must be obtained at not more than two sittings and must include English, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce and any two (2) other relevant subjects and also present at least the yearly minimum JAMB cut - off mark which will be determined by the University Senate. In addition, Kings University conducts screening exercises for all candidates seeking admission into the University.                           

  1. Admission for Direct Entry Candidates

Credit level pass in five (5) subjects in the SSCE/GCE/NECO O/L or their equivalent which must be obtained at not more than two sittings and must include English, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce and any two (2) other relevant subject and also present a minimum of 7 points in GCE Advance level / IJMB / JUPEB or Merit in two (2) core subjects in NCE or Upper Credit in ND certificate from a recognized Institution.

 

 

B.Sc.  ENTREPRENEURSHIP

  1. Admission Entrance by UTME:

(C) INFORMATION ON ACADEMIC MATTERS

A candidate offered provisional admission into Kings University becomes a bona fide student of the University after completing his/her registration and matriculation exercises. Any student involved in falsification of his/her credentials or results will have his/her registration nullified. The degree programmes run for four (4) academic sessions on Course Unit System basis.

Each academic session is divided into two semesters namely: Manna (First) and Quail (Second) Semesters and each semester consists of 15weeks of teaching and 2 weeks of examination.

(D) MODE AND DURATION OF STUDY

The mode of study shall be full-time. The duration of study shall be eight (8) semesters for Regular Candidates and six (6) semesters for Direct Entry candidates.

(E) STRUCTURE OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMMES

The Academic Programme in the Department of Business and Entrepreneurial studies has three components.

  1. (a). Compulsory University Courses taken at 100-400 Levels.

      (b). Compulsory Faculty Courses taken at 100-400 Levels.

       (c). Departmental Courses taken at 100-400 Levels.

The status of each course that is whether Compulsory, Required or Elective is normally determined, from which the student’s workload is computed. 

 2. Compulsory students Seminar and Research Projects are taken at 400 Level. These will expose the students to the art of public presentation of scientific data and how scientific investigations are carried out in the various disciplines.
