DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Department of Biological Sciences is to provide high-quality education in various aspects of biotechnology and microbiology, with an emphasis on experimental learning and problem solving, while cultivating a diverse and thriving intellectual community of faculty, staff, and students focused on excellence in teaching, learning, and research in the life sciences and to perform competitive research in specific areas that reflect the needs of society.

DEPARTMENTAL VISION

The vision of the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Kings University, Odeomu is “to produce professionally competent leaders with the best of integrity and entrepreneurial skills, that would transform Nigeria and continually sustain her as a technologically advanced Nation”.

OVERVIEW

The Department of Biological Sciences is a leading academic Department in the Faculty of Science. It is one of the pioneer Departments in the Faculty of Science which began operations on February 1, 2016 and runs two academic programmes in the Life Sciences - Biotechnology and Microbiology. These programmes open the academic curricula that are tailored towards the Benchmark Minimum Standards (BMAS) stipulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The Department took off with a Professor and two Assistant Lecturers, supported by Adjunct/Visiting Lecturers from other Universities. The Department has seasoned lecturers of all ranks and fields of Microbiology and Biotechnology. At inception Prof. A.C. Achudume who was the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Sciences also doubled as the Head, Department of Biological Sciences. He was succeeded later by Dr. S.K. Babatunde who became the Acting Head of Department in the 2017/2018 academic session. Currently, Dr. O.B. Ojuederie is the Acting Head of Department. The Department of Biological Sciences is committed to raising new generation of leaders in the Biosciences by active teaching and research as well as community development, in line with the Vision and Mission of Kings University. The academic staff of the faculty are highly motivated and dedicated to the delivery of quality education to the students through strict adherence to well-structured course contents, lecture schedules, and the use of state-of-the-art audio-visual aids for lecture delivery and tutorials. Lecture attendance by students is compulsory and during the lockdown as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, lectures were delivered online using the Kings University Learning Management System (LMS) and interactive sessions had with students.

The curricula of the Programmes, lecture materials and practical manuals are regularly updated to meet the current trend in the life sciences which addresses contemporary issues in various aspects of Nigeria’s economy using technological advances in food, agriculture, medicine, and allied industries. The biotechnology and microbiology laboratories are continuously furnished with modern scientific equipment and apparatuses for regular students’ experiments, research and specialized laboratory services. The Department pursues basic and applied research in biotechnology and microbiology especially in medical, pharmaceutical, food, and agricultural related research using modern technologies. Ongoing research projects in the Department include fortification of foods with mineral enhanced and non-mineral enhanced edible fungi, plasmid analysis and plasmid curing of extended spectrum beta lactamase producing Escherichia coli from wild animals, antiproliferative activity of nanoparticles-mushroom extract complex on breast cancer cells, as well as promoting the utilization of underutilised legumes such as the African yam bean tubers for food and nutrition security, plant-microbe interactions, effect of nanoparticles on the growth of plants under abiotic stresses, among others. Students in the Department undergo six months of Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as part of their graduation requirement. The Department also services other Departments within the Faculty and the University. It, therefore, joins the University community in transforming students into resourceful technocrats, expert thinkers, and solution providers, hands-on and innovative scientists.

LABORATORIES

There are two functional well-equipped laboratories in the Department which are manned by two qualified technologists. The Laboratories serve the academic programmes of the Department and are well equipped for teaching and conducting practical classes for students and academic research of staff. Equipment available in the Biotechnology Laboratory includes Lyophillizer, UV Spectrophotometer, Cold centrifuge, Bench top microcentrifuge, Laminar flowhood, Autoclaves, Applied Biosystems Thermocycler (PCR), Hybridizer, Water baths, Distillers, Ovens, Fume Cupboard, Agarose gel electrophoresis system, UV illuminator, e.t.c. The Lyophillizer and other facilities are made available for use by external researchers and students.
