INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE

  • Ownership: Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC)
  • Licensed on 4th March 2015.
  • Academic activities commenced when it enrolled 88 pioneer students; now in its sixth academic session.
  • The University has graduated two sets (2018/2019 and 2019/2020).
  • Has a student population of 183 as of the 2020/2021 academic session.
  • Planned and established as a fully residential campus.
  • Produced Ten (10) first class graduates at the first convocation of the University. Two of the 2019 graduates have resumed as Graduates Assistants following the automatic employment offered by the University Chancellor at the First Convocation Ceremony.

General Requirements for Academic Programmes

All candidates seeking admission into the University, irrespective of their UTME scores, are required to pass the University post-UTME screening test and must have Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalent with credit level passes in five subjects.  The candidates must also earn an acceptable score in the UTME for the year.

KU’S SOCIAL CONTRACT

The University is committed to the socio-economic development of the nation by providing access to quality education to the teeming league of youths in Nigeria. Kings University can thus be aptly described as a social enterprise, as the University provides scholarships, runs an Entrepreneurship Centre, Centre for Continuing Education and Medical Outreach programmes as part of its mandate to the host communities and other surrounding communities.

  1. SCHOLARSHIPS - currently accounts for over 78% of the University’s students’ population.
      • Matthew Ashimolowo Scholarship Scheme (MASS): A total of 50 full tuition and accommodation scholarships are available for academically outstanding applicants of Kings University.
      • KICC Scholarship Scheme: A total of 90 full tuition and accommodation scholarships are available for applicants of Kings University.
      • Mummy Fowler Foundation Scholarship: full scholarship for one (1) outstanding and indigent student.
  2. ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTRE: 

The Entrepreneurship Centre serves as a creative hub and training facility for students of all levels, unemployed youths and young adults to develop innovative skills and competence in areas such as technopreneurship, ecopreneurship (Green energy), small businesses and social entrepreneurship. The University continues to support and collaborate with the different levels of government and non-governmental organisations through the provision of digital skills training and other entrepreneurial training programmes for the youth and the unskilled adults in the state to reduce the high rate of youth employment in the country and to complement the efforts of government in the areas of poverty, gender imbalance and economic development. 

3. GENDER EQUALITY:

Kings University is dedicated to academic and research excellence while also enhancing gender equality and inclusion. For instance, the University offered employment to all the ten (10) graduates with first class degrees at the first convocation of the University, 60% of them being female and they are also being supported in the pursuit of their postgraduate education. The University is also proud to be one of few Universities in the country with a larger proportion of senior leadership roles being occupied by women.

   4. CENTRE FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION: 

The University Centre for Continuing Education is designed to train participants on the ability to read, write and communicate effectively in the nation's official language while also equipping them with simple arithmetic skills and vocational skills to improve the socio-economic well-being of the individuals. This is one of the life-long learning endeavours of the University.

   5. MEDICAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME: 

The University medical centre caters to health needs of the host community and the neighbouring communities.

MILESTONES

  1. Emerged 7th in the Nigerian Universities Systems Open Educational Resources (NUSOER) ranking test among second-generation Private Universities carried out by the NUC in 2018.
  2. KU debate team emerged third at the 2017 Centre for Human Security (CHS), Olusegun Obasanjo Inter-University Debate Competition.
  3. Fully deployed the KU Learning Management System for lectures and examinations during the COVID-19 induced closure of institutions. 
  4. Hosted the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Week with participants from local and international Universities.
  5. Hosted the first South West Zonal Symposium of the Nigeria Society for Microbiologists (NSM) in 2016
  6. Research group led by Professor Adenike Kuku, the current Vice-Chancellor, a renowned Biochemist and Dr. Oyedotun Oyeleke, who had worked previously with Pfizer have breakthroughs in the following areas –
  • Extraction of Vernolia amygdalina (bitter leaf), Curcuma longa (turmeric) for the cure of cancer.
  • Working on some indigenous plants which have shown lethal effects on mosquitoes and other insects for the production of insecticides and other insects’ repellents.
  • Conversion of brewer spent grain to degradable tetra packs.

RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT

  1. Innovations in Biotechnology and Food Security

Researchers in the University are working on a greenhouse technology solution for the production of tomatoes for the Nigerian populace and increased yield by reducing diseases, pest attack and damage by external factors. 

In the area of rice production, work is also on-going to evaluate the use of bioactive plant sources and selected anti blast fungi as a means of managing the rice blast and to package the technology for ease of use by farmers in Nigeria. This technology if successfully trialed would address the problem of food availability and also by extension provide thousands of jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in these communities.

   2. Green Economy and Commercialization of Research Products

The research is working on the biosynthesis of nanoparticles using economically viable and eco-friendly means for the production of paper and biomass conversion into biogas. The goal is to create more awareness about the importance of Green Economy to Nigeria.
