Overview
The Department of Languages and Linguistics came on board on February 1st, 2016. It started as one of the pioneer Departments in the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences. The Department commenced with only one academic staff member in person of Dr. Abimbola Aworinde, a Senior Lecturer.
Two other lecturers were later employed. They were Dr. Adeola Ojoawo and Mr. Ademola Adesola who were subsequently engaged to boost the staff strength of the department. As at now, the academic staff strength has increased to nine. The initial number of students of the department from inception was four. This has progressively increased as years roll by. Dr. A. O Ajala is currently the Acting Coordinator of the Department.

Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is to equip students with sound knowledge of English language and Literature by devoting attention to the achievement of proficiency and competence in both oral and written English language.
This is with a view to making students acquire sound communication skills in all areas of English usages, creative writing skills as well as adequate exposure to the methodologies of critical analysis of literary and non-literary texts. The training is tailored toward helping students to be well grounded in all areas of English education so as to achieve successful careers in their chosen occupations and professions anywhere in the world. However, emphasis is also placed on the study of English not only as a second language, but also as the official language in Nigeria.

The major objectives of a Bachelor’s degree English and Literary Studies programme are:
- train students to acquire adequate communicative competence in both spoken and written varieties of English language, thereby giving them a good grounding and effective mastery of the Language in its various applications to achieve adequate self-expression and self-actualisation;
- equip students with the knowledge of forms and features of varieties of English used in different professional domains such as business communication, legal communication, electronic broadcast media, print journalism, advertising, sports commentaries and biography writing;
- equip students with adequate linguistic knowledge of the English Language through detailed study of its sound system, its lexicon, its syntax, semantics and usages;
- adequately prepare students to pursue postgraduate studies in English Language, Linguistic and Literature;
- instill in students valuable skills of critical thinking and;
- orientate students towards self-employment with focus on skills such as writing articles in magazines, speeches, designing and presenting special programs on radio or TV, designing and publishing magazines as well as creative writing and other kinds of original output through independent thought and creativity.

Admission Requirements
O'Level Requirements: Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language and three other Arts or Social Science subjects.
UTME Subjects: English Language and any three (3) from Arts or Social Science subjects.
Direct Entry: Minimum of 5 points in GCE A’ level, IJMB/JUPEB or Merit in two (2) in two core subjects in NCE or Upper Credit in ND/HND certificate from recognized institution.
